Helmed by Kim's former assistant director Juhn Jai-hong (whose debut, "Beautiful," preemed at Berlin in 2008), the pic plays like an enjoyable Cold War-themed TV pilot featuring a mute protag of uncertain political persuasion whose physical endurance puts him in the near-superhero category. Budget constraints are apparent, furthering the sense of a smallscreen caper; fests and ancillary should get some traction. Poongsan is the name of a cigarette brand from North Korea and the nickname of a mysterious smuggler (Yun Gye-sang) hired to get people and things across the Demilitarized Zone from North to South. When he's caught by secret-service agents from the South, they decide to test his claim of getting from Pyongyang safely across the border in three hours. His mission: to bring back In-oak (Kim Gyu-ri), the g.f. of a recent high-level defector (Kim Jong-su) who won't fully cooperate with intelligence until she's at his side. The journey is fraught with conflict, but unsurprisingly by the time they've had their adventure -- under three hours -- her old b.f. isn't looking as appealing, following Poongsan's impressive display of brawn and wherewithal. The former lover, an arrogant, manipulative type, senses something's changed in her and colludes with South Korean intelligence (not so intelligent) to have the guy tortured on suspicion of being a North Korean agent. However, Poongsan's talents are needed, and the DMZ gets crossed more times than the Ventura freeway, resulting in kidnappings, torture and a little duplicity. The sides aren't so easy to distinguish, and it gets confusing trying to figure out who's doing what to whom and why, but through it all, our man Poongsan retains his mute appeal even under extreme duress (though he does scream out in pain). Given that this is a Kim Ki-duk-scripted pic, the action scenes are leavened with humor, and there's a certain early 1980s charm in seeing the subtitled exclamations of "You commie bastards!" The middle unquestionably sags a bit, but the energy level of the last quarter barrels forward toward an enjoyable climax. Yun's charisma and physicality provide a pleasingly ambiguous anchor to the ensuing chaos; it's easy to imagine him as the star of a TV series based on the Poongsan character. Production values reflect the tight finances, making use of noir-like tricks such as limited space and plenty of black shadow around the edges. 'Harry Potter' DVDs Returning Late 2012, Early 2013

When I suggested that another "Harry Potter" complete DVD boxed set was on its way in the next year or so, I wasn't very far off. Warner Bros might be making a big deal of the fact that "Harry Potter" DVDs are being taken off shelves starting December 29, but they won't be gone forever. In fact, one head honcho over at WB says that yes, there will be a new even better special edition boxed set of all eight "Potter" DVDs due out by the end of 2012. Entertainment Weekly chatted with Warner Bros's senior VP and general manager of their theatrical catalog Jeff Baker, who says that execs at WB are planning on a new boxed set focused on special features due out next year. "There is discussion internally about aggregating assets from all of these films over the last decade and adding some new things -- weve never done an Ultimate Edition on the final two films -- and doing some grand kind of piece," he says. "It could be the end of 2012 or the beginning of 13." In other words, the current boxed set that is coming out on November 11 that has all eight "Potter" DVDs doesn't sound like the be-all-end-all collector's item for die-hard "Potter" fans, which explains why the current boxed set is going for $60 on Amazon.com, by all intents and purposes a steal. If you -- like me -- have been saving your pretty pennies for a compilation that includes a whole slew of special features, perhaps its best to hold off on purchasing the DVDs until next year when the (better) edition comes out. Baker adds that, though WB has been making a big deal about how they're pulling the "Potter" DVDs off shelves on December 29, the DVDs will probably still be around at the beginning of next year. It's not that WB is issuing a recall of the DVDs, it's that they won't be shipping out any new ones. "Even though there could be a sense of urgency from the consumers' perspective, there will be 'Potter' product come the first of the year," he explains. "But over time, theyll be less and less of that inventory. At some point, whether it's next April or May or June or July, it'll probably be very difficult to find 'Harry Potter' product, especially if you're looking for the third movie or the fifth movie, for example." If you had been getting worried that you'd never be able to find a "Potter" DVD again after December 29, this should ease your fears. The Boy Who Lived isn't going to be gone forever, and he'll likely be back before you even get a chance to really miss him. With that in mind, plus their reassurance that there will still be Potter product on shelves next year (though rarer in the springish season), does that make you feel less rushed about getting Potter now? Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller are the patron saints of awkward sex comedies after 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' and it appears the duo may team-up again for 'Sex Tape.' Deadline reports that Segel and Reese Witherspoon are in talks to co-star in the film, a raunchy comedy about a married couple who decides to spice up their sex life by incorporating a video camera -- a great idea, until the tape of their sexual exploits goes missing. Sony purchased the spec script for 'Sex Tape' by writer Kate Angelo in June for a reported seven-figures. If Stoller directs, it would be his third time doing so with Segel as star; in addition to 'Sarah Marshall,' Stoller directed Segel in 'Five-Year Engagement,' which is due in 2012. The two also co-wrote the script for 'The Muppets.' As for Witherspoon's involvement. Directed, written by Rob Holder.With: Paul Rhys, Claire Skinner, Paul Ritter, Georgia King, Ewan Stewart, Nicholas Day, Phillip Manikum, Richard Cambridge, Freddy Downham, Juan Herrera, Gabriel Vick, Marc Danbury.An ambitious Brit indie that doesn't quite meet the expectations it raises, "Eliminate: Archie Cookson" starts as a droll sad-sack spin on spy spoofery, but by the end has shifted from comedy toward a dramatic heft its spindly legs can't support. While that awkward tonal mix ultimately makes for an offbeat curio rather than a fully satisfying night out, d.p.-turned-writer-helmer Rob Holder's debut feature remains a diverting harbinger of better work to come. Offshore home-format sales look likely. Title figure (Paul Rhys, in his first bigscreen lead since 2002's "Food of Love") is a failure by any standard, particularly that of his ex-wife, Camilla (Claire Skinner). Once an Intelligence Dept. up-and-comer, he's now slunk sufficiently down the ladder to hold his position -- these days little more than office grunt work -- solely thanks to pitying, influential in-laws. While former spouse and horribly precocious son Hector (Freddy Downham) still occupy tony digs and high social status, Archie spends nights drinking in his dreary flat, days sleepwalking through Russian-to-English translation duties. He's literally asleep on the job (slumped out of sight in an audio transcription booth) when assassins with silencers gun down his co-workers over some missing old Cold War audiotapes that could compromise the integrity of government, as well as two elderly gentlemen spymasters (Philip Manikum, Nicholas Day). The two coolly decide that Archie -- who now has the incriminating reels in his possession -- must die too, dispatching veteran Ennis (Paul Miller) to do the deed. But since Ennis and Archie were colleagues in better days, Ennis gives him 24 hours to return the goods and hopefully save his own life. Naturally, things don't go as planned, though once "Eliminate" turns into a relatively straightforward espionage film, its budgetary and imaginative limitations become more apparent. What starts out as a dry sendup of "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold"-type mellers grows steadily less comedic, and without the emotional weight or clever, suspenseful twists needed to up the narrative ante. In particular, the film takes too seriously the protag's relationships with Camilla and new squeeze Lucy (Georgia King), a slightly ditzy bombshell of suspect loyalties. The finale flirts with tragedy, but the lightweight pic can't handle it. There are enough appealing elements here to make one wish for a remake that correctly balances the seriocomedy, ideally hewing more toward the ironic, satirical tenor David Hamill's score (breezily nodding to '60s genre pics) maintains throughout. Holder demonstrates a sure hand with his accomplished cast, a nice feel for deadpan scene pacing, and an ease with the bricks-and-mortar aspects of making a modest enterprise look like a pricier one.
