Who's Up For a New Scarface? And 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today
Happy Thursday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Elton John wants to make a musical biopic about Elton John… Harvey Weinstein gets to a special Place with Sean Penn… Joe Pesci will reportedly sue for his Gotti role… Ang Lee is very serious about his 3-D Life of Pi… and more. · Scarface, the gangster narrative already known for influential film versions in 1932 and 1983, is basically turning into the Star is Born of violent outsider mob legends: Universal and producer Martin Bregman (who produced the ’80s incarnation) are reportedly reteaming to develop a new version for contemporary audiences. “The film is not intended to be a remake or a sequel,” notes Deadline, and everything from the lead character’s ethnicity to the specific crime racket of choice has yet to be determined. Hmm. I feel like maybe a ruthless freshman Tea Party delegate in Washington would really take this to the next level. [Deadline] · Elton John is adapting his life story for the screen, roping in his Billy Elliott writing partner Lee Hall for a “biographical musical fantasy” called Rocketman. But can it coexist with Scarface? [Deadline] · The Weinstein Company has picked up the Sean Penn-as-Robert Smith-as-Nazi hunter road-trip flick This Must Be the Place for U.S. distribution. JUdging by Stephanie Zacharek’s review out of Cannes, this one will see scissors before it sees theaters. [Press release] · The producer of Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father says that Joe Pesci doesn’t have a leg to stand on in his suit claiming they reached an “iron-clad,” $3 million deal for Pesci to star in the film. OK, fine about the leg. Does he have a contract? Seems like that might settle it. [TMZ] · Fox chief Tom Rothman wants to make it very, very clear that Ang Lee has great expectations for the 3-D in The Life of Pi: “Ang believes he can use 3-D to envelop the audience, to transport the audience on what is a very metaphysical journey,” he said Wednesday at the 3-D Entertainment Summit. “It’s a different language of storytelling. He’s using the stereoscope to adjust the audience’s relationship to that character.” [LAT] · James Cameron, meanwhile, kept it much more real about studios’ 3-D conversions of their back catalogs: “They see this potential. All it takes is a little healthy greed. And doubts tend to go away.” Can you not love the guy? Don’t answer that. [The Wrap] Transformers 3 Watch Online Free
Kutcher Sets Sitcom Record; Sheen Roast a Big Draw
NEW YORK (AP) Both Ashton Kutcher and Charlie Sheen have something to brag about during their big nights on television.Kutcher's debut as Sheen's replacement in the CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men" was seen by 28.7 million people on Monday. The Nielsen Co. said Tuesday that was more than any other episode in the show's first eight seasons, when Sheen was the star. The sitcom's previous best came in May 2005 following the final episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond."Meanwhile, Sheen appeared Monday as the "victim" of a Comedy Central roast that reached 6.4 million people. That is the second most-watched telecast in the cable network's history, behind only Jeff Dunham's holiday special in 2008.The season-opening episode of "Two and a Half Men," television's most popular comedy, was much anticipated. Producers kept it a secret how they would kill off Sheen's character and introduce Kutcher's.Sheen had been fired from the show last season for drug use and erratic behavior. He launched a weekslong tirade against his bosses, including show creator Chuck Lorre, and Lorre got revenge in Monday's episode.Sheen's Charlie Harper character was killed when he was hit by a subway train in Paris.Meanwhile, Kutcher appeared as an Internet billionaire unsuccessful in a suicide attempt over a crumbled relationship. He fell right into the show's randy ways, picking up two women during a bar visit that same night. The success of "Two and a Half Men" gave a boost to the premiere of CBS' new comedy "2 Broke Girls" that followed it. That show had an audience of 19.4 million, the largest audience for a fall sitcom premiere since "Inside Schwartz" a decade ago.The veteran CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother" had its best season premiere numbers. By contrast, the season premiere of "Hawaii Five-0" had a relatively modest audience of 12 million.Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Harvey Weinstein Wants to Co-Host a Screening of 'Butter' With Michele Bachmann
As his years of producing have proven, Harvey Weinstein is an expert when it comes to the politics of Oscar season. However, with the GOP debates in full swing and his latest film 'Butter,' a political satire, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Weinstein decided that now was the time to speak up about actual politics -- at least with regard to Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann. Though not present at the 'Butter' premiere last night, Weinstein had the film's co-star Olivia Wilde deliver the following remarks to the TIFF crowd: In 20 years of coming to the Toronto Film Festival, I've never released a statement for a film. But I would like to take this moment to formally invite Republican Congresswoman from Minnesota and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to co-host with me the big premiere of 'Butter' in Iowa in a few months from now. I know Michele will already be in Iowa for the caucus, so we can save some money on airfare and travel. I would, of course, be more than happy to fly in the other leading members of the Tea Party movement to make an entire day of it. We could take some math classes in the morning to help balance the budget, brush up on the Constitution in the afternoon, play some ping-pong, and then maybe some verbal ping-pong on gay rights and women's rights (especially the right to choose). But at night we can all go hand-in-hand to the premiere of 'Butter,' a fun and important film where we'll share some popcorn and laughs. These are the kind of bipartisan effort that makes America great. I look forward to hearing from Michele, and I'm particularly looking forward to those classes on the Constitution. All my best, Harvey. 'Butter' (hitting theaters on Oct. 28) stars Jennifer Garner as a Midwestern housewife who will stop at nothing to reclaim her husband's former glory as the local butter-carving champion. Per THR, the story is a clear jab at the American political process, with Garner playing a dead ringer for Bachmann. Definitely an inspired way to promote a film, but something tells us Bachmann won't be RSVPing. [via THR] Photo courtesy of Getty Images for The Weinstein Company. Watch X-Men: First Class
Lady Antebellum Drops Much-Anticipated New Album
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The people of Lady Antebellum get requested a hard question constantly: When will you write another hit like Need At This Point You? Thats similar to asking whether they can pick some winning lottery amounts, two times. The prospect of achieving one worldwide hit is astronomical. But two? How could we have ever do this? singer Charles Kelley stated. Which was a once-in-a-lifetime song. However I think well keep having success as we stay in keeping with ourselves and our fans, our core audience, the new bands audience. Were very flattered more individuals are into us, but (pop music is) a genre along with a world where its a lot more, in a single day and the next. As lengthy as our country fans still search what used to do, well hopefully be around for any very long time. That type of evenhanded approach has led Lady Antebellum through probably the most difficult periods any band must navigate: instant fame. Need At This Point You skyrocketed the trio from the well-regarded as youthful country act with lots of promise to multiplatinum worldwide celebrities. They together with places like New zealand and australia, with fans shouting their lyrics back their way in the last row, and also have needed translators for a few of their interviews. They gained an area filled with trophies, including that many surreal evening once they won five Grammys, including record and song of the season for Need At This Point You. They grew to become a tight schedule-to do something for national anthems and guest looks, rose the nation music ladder from opening act to headliner and pressed in to the pop music world like couple of country functions before. Because they release their third album, Own the Evening, now, Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dork Haywood are philosophical regarding their anticipation. Nobody hides their expect a follow-up hit and could be disappointed if Evening does not catchfire with fans. But standing firmly on the foundation they built lengthy prior to the spotlight found them, they feel they did operator. The relaxation hasn't experienced what they can control. Whether we now have that smash, the record is an accumulation of better, more powerful tunes, for me personally, Kelley stated. Can be when the fans believe way. They have spoken on Lady As first single from Evening, making Only A Hug their fifth No. 1 on Advertisements country charts. Evening is an accumulation of 12 love tunes that reflects the amazing and difficult-gained sophistication that encircled this guitar rock band because it ascended the charts all over the world. The bustle of instant fame can tear a band apart and numerous scores of 1-hit miracles have fallen apart underneath the stress. Lady A, however, flourished when things got difficult. I must say they've handled the knowledge superbly, stated Gary Borman, the trios manager, who also runs the careers of Keith Urban and Belief Hill. They understood in the start what a few of the challenges would be and rather than sweeping them underneath the carpet or getting swept up within the excitement from the moment, they really drilled lower and required the chance and required time to build up their abilities of communication and located some balance within their relationship. You will find a lot of mistakes to create, from simple excess to deficiencies in focus on that-important next song. Not just did the people of Lady A effectively navigate all individuals issues, they handled to develop. Scott and Haywood joined into associations (Scotts engaged and Haywoods happy but remaining mother) throughout this era and Kelley states his marriage only has enhanced. The trio stated this stability was cemented in position throughout their early years together. The melding of College of Georgia pals Haywood, 29, and Kelley, 30, with Scott, 25, the daughter of Grammywinner Linda Davis, wasnt initially so peaceful. It required us time for you to learn to contact one another the easiest way and every people receive it, Scott stated. We really I dont feel embarrassed to say really had someone come and mediate a few occasions. Kelley and Scott, who provide the band its beautiful boy-girl harmonies, satisfy the classic meaning of the kind A personality, outgoing and demonstrative. Meanwhile, Haywood, the guy behind the musical ideas, is quiet and has a tendency to keep his opinions to themself. Communication from time to time shut lower because the trio attempted to locate its means by the background music world, with one another. The very first 2 yrs were very hard, Kelley stated. The final 2 yrs happen to be quite simple. I believe its honestly a very wise method to sort out things, Scott stated. (We used) not just a counselor, but a communications specialist. We determined how you can argue and sort out things, but argue professionally. Because we agree with several things of all things but on things that we didnt, it had been determining working through individuals things. Some time and a few periods with this mediator and that we figured things out. Their relationship really joined together round the discharge of Need At This Point You at the end of 2009, just over time. The song, in regards to a late-evening booty call at the time of the unsuccessful relationship, resonated with fans rapidly and when the album of the identical title was launched in The month of january 2010, the trio had been sliding onto pop radio and climbing individuals charts too. The following 18 several weeks were wonderful with amazing new encounters piling atop each other. The tunes on Evening be affected by it period. There's some sadness initially and also the corresponding tunes about heartbreak: Scott experienced a hard breakup before meeting her girlfriend, for example. But typically, the album is upbeat, happy and self-assured, like its designers. I believe were the nearest weve have you been like a group at this time, Haywood stated. And i believe which comes through within our songwriting. I seem like I understand what Hillary could be comfortable saying and what we should can dive into, and the other way around. And i believe we work great in individuals situations. Hopefully the tunes possess a genuine feel for them because we seem like we write them from the very personal place. Traders going steady
Andrew KosoveIn the annals of Hollywood history, the associations between traders and production companies might be called as brief, tumultuous matters. But, there has been some equity gamers and production cake toppers who've handled to romance each other for a long time within the biz. As with any relationship, those between billionaire moguls and Hollywood filmmakers are full of ups, downs and training learned.Fred Cruz and Alcon Entertainment happen to be romancing each other in excess of fifteen years, however the relationship has arrived at a level. Alcon, after sensibly using FedEx mogul Smith's money and having box office success, no more depends on the Cruz gold coin.Based on Alcon's co-Boss and founder Andrew Kosove, photos including 2009's "The Blind Side," which cumed a lot more than $300 million worldwide, and last year's "It of Eli," which made a lot more than $157 million globally, have permitted the organization to begin living from its library cash flows, and never its longtime equity investor."We are while using receivables on our effective movies to create new movies," Kosove states. "I be prepared to set off our very own profits for that relaxation from the good reputation for the company.InchKosove and co-Boss and founder Broderick Manley founded Alcon in 1997, backed by Cruz, FedEx's founder, chairman and Boss. Since that time, the organization has created or co-created 18 films, utilizing Smith's equity along with a $550 million debt facility the organization guaranteed in 2008.Kosove states and keep expenses low is a answer to the prosperity of the Alcon/Cruz partnership, open communication -- as with worthwhile relationship -- has always performed a vital role too.Inch1 factor we have always completed with Mr. Cruz is be very upfront using the information. He always recognizes that he's complete use of what are you doing,Inch states Kosove. "Fred told us many a long time ago, 'Don't be afraid to provide me not so good news.A "Another answer to the effective Alcon/Cruz relationship, Kosove states, is the fact that Alcon goodies Smith's money as though it were its very own. Kosove notes the team attempts to conserve a disciplined cost structure for Alcon projects -- which means finding creative methods to promote films to be able to avoid overspending on P&A and talent, no matter just how much the business's photos gross in the B.O."I believe traders can realize that sometimes movies win and often they lose, but they would like to begin to see the overwhelming most of their capital going towards making movies. Should you walked into Alcon today, you'd have no clue there is any difference within the financial success of the organization than should you walked in here pre-'Blind Side.' "Though Alcon's success has permitted Cruz to become completely "off risk" based on Kosove, the Alcon topper still credits Smith's "persistence" when assisting to launch the shingle in the 1990's. "It has been an extremely lengthy relationship and Fred is much more than mine and Broderick's financial backer," states Kosovo. "He's like family to us."Cruz reciprocates the love: "I am really happy with what Alcon has accomplished to date."A graduate of Yale, he quipped: "It clearly pains me greatly to express that about two Princeton men."Highlights from the Film Finance Forum East9-9:30 a.m. Welcoming Remarks: The Wealthy Rewards of the Dangerous Business by Peter Bart, Variety9:30-10:45 a.m. Panel: Thinking about the Film Business being an Resource Class in the present MarketRafael Fogel, Falcon Investment Advisors John DeCenzo, Goldman, Sachs & Co. Toronto 2011: Oliver Hirschbiegel to direct Guy Hibbert's 'Eye in the Sky' for FilmNation
TORONTO -- Glen Basner's FilmNation has acquired Guy Hibbert's script Eye in the Sky for Oliver Hirschbiegel to direct, with the hopes of begin prepping the project later this year. The international thriller follows a group of characters around the globe as they are each impacted by the decision to drop a drone missile on a house in East Africa. Eye in the Sky is Hibbert and Hirschbiegel's second collaboration after the critically acclaimed Liam Leeson starrer Five Minutes of Heaven. FilmNation executive vice president of production Karen Lunder brought in the project, and will produce alongside the company's president of production Aaron Ryder. Stephen Wright, who works with the BBC Films, where the project was initially developed, also will produce. He also was a producer on Five Minutes of Heaven. "As a company we have been searching for a project to do with Oliver for some time. He's a filmmaker I've been pursuing for years and I'm incredibly excited that Guy's script is going to be that project. It's one of the best scripts I've read in a long time", said Ryder. Hirschbiegel (Downfall, Das Experiment) said he was drawn to the project because it examines contemporary warfare and its detachment from real life. "It's truly a wild ride focusing on twenty people in different countries and how their decisions impact a street corner somewhere in Nairobi. It's a story I haven't seen told before on screen," Hirschbiegel said. FilmNation acquired the rights from BBC Films, in cooperation with BBC TV. Zoe Brown brokered the deal for the BBC and Alison Cohen negotiated the deal for FilmNation. Oliver Hirschbiegel is represented by UTA and by attorney Barry Hirsch. Guy Hibbert is repped by UTA and The Agency in London. Related Topics Toronto International Film Festival Oliver Hirschbiegel Watch Transformers 3 Dark Of The Moon Online For Free
